Looking for something a little different from the 5.56x45 ammunition you use for target shooting with your AR-platform rifle? Or how about ammo you could successfully fire to defend yourself against lightly armored threats? This 5.56 SS109 ammo by Ammo Inc. of Arizona fits both bills!

SS109 is essentially the same designation as M855. Although its tip is not painted, this round’s FMJ’s core is split into two sections: a lead rear and a steel front. The SS109 bullet thus possesses the fortitude it needs to penetrate sheet metal several hundred yards downrange, and under the proper circumstances it may also split in half as it bores through soft tissue.

A few caveats come with this ammo. First, it is magnetic and accordingly unwelcome at many ranges. Second, its heavier bullet is best stabilized by a 1:9 or 1:8 twist barrel, although a 1:7 will also do for all but the longest-range shooting. Third, the bullet’s partial steel core will damage steel targets. This ammo is non-corrosive, brass-cased and reloadable, and it is compatible with all rifles chambered for 5.56.
