Hornady Ammunition 55 Grain Full Metal Jacket Boat Tail (FMJ-BT) Ammo Details

A lot of 223 Rem target ammo is packaged in 20-round boxes. We always find this amusing. It implies that people fire only 20 rounds of 223 Rem ammo at a time. It’s like if Frito-Lay started packaging potato chips in bags of three.

That’s why we applaud Hornady for packaging their Frontier ammo in big, meaty 150-round boxes. And when you order this case, you get eight of them. Gadzooks.

Hornady has a reputation for making crème de la crème bullets: ELD-VT, ELD-X, ELD-M, and so on. Frontier is their way of showing that they also make the much simpler bullets you’d want to use for range practice. These target-jabbers are loaded with full metal jackets: lead core, copper jacket, zero steel, cannelure, drag-reducing tapered base (i.e. boat tail, or “BT”), and 55 grain weight that confers 3,240 fps muzzle velocity (same as M193) out of a 24” test barrel. Hornady’s promised 0.243 G1 BC represents supersonic velocity until just a hair beyond 700 yards.

This ammo’s not loaded with fast-expanding ultra-dramatic varmint hunting bullets. That said, you still wouldn’t want to be a woodchuck under the influence of a 55 grain FMJBT. This ammo’s also not loaded with remanufactured brass cases. They are new brass, and they were very clearly heat treated correctly because Hornady did not polish them for improved cosmetic appearance.
