300 WHISPER

Shhh! The 300 Whisper (aka 300 Fireball, or 300-221) is virtually identical to the 300 AAC Blackout. It may be loaded with a lightweight bullet if ballistic performance comparable to the 7.62x39 is desired, or a heavyweight 200+ grain bullet for a subsonic muzzle velocity that is conducive to suppressor use. You can fire factory loaded 300 Whisper ammunition in a 300 BLK firearm, although we advise consulting the ammo or firearm manufacturer before doing so.

What is the Caliber of a .300 Whisper?

The .300 Whisper has a caliber of exactly .308 inches. “Caliber” is a statement of the diameter of a bullet or the barrel’s interior, and it is generally used to quickly determine the size of a round. However, caliber is not the only factor when it comes to power, speed, and performance, as case length and design are also crucial.

At .308 inches in caliber, the .300 Whisper shares the same bullet diameter as many popular cartridges, including the .308 Winchester, the .30-06 Springfield, and the .30-30 Winchester. However, because of its purpose and design, it has very different performance characteristics so don't use all those cartridges

Why is it Named “Whisper?”

The name “Whisper” clues us to the design and purpose of this cartridge. The .300 Whisper is part of the Whisper family of cartridges, which were created by SSK Industries. This is a line of cartridges that were created specifically for military and police purposes, although they are used for specialty hunting. The line is marked by relatively large bullets backed by subsonic (slow) loads.
