.224 Valkyrie

The 224 Valkyrie (aka 224 Valk) was developed by Federal Premium to enable consistent 1,000-yard accuracy out of an AR-pattern modern sporting rifle. Do not attempt to fire 224 Valkyrie in a 223 Rem rifle. Do select a 90 grain soft point for hunting, a 90 grain hollow point boat tail (HBPT) for long-range accuracy, or a 75 grain total metal jacket (TMJ) for more casual target shooting.

How Does the .224 Valkyrie Compare to the .223 Remington?

The .224 Valkyrie is essentially a necked-down 6.8 SPC with a .22-caliber bullet. Basically, it’s a slightly smaller bullet fitted behind a large case. The result is a cartridge that delivers that same size of projectiles (generally) as a .223 Remington, but it has more speed and, hence, more energy at the target. Federal Premium Ammunition, which created the .224 Valkyrie, offers American Eagle TMJ products for both cartridges; the .224 Valkyrie has a muzzle velocity of 3,000 feet per second and a muzzle energy of 1,499 foot-pounds. The 223 Remington, which is neither slow nor weak, has a muzzle velocity of 2,775 feet per second and a muzzle energy of 1,282 foot pounds.

How Does the .224 Valkyrie Compare to the .224 Weatherby Magnum?

These cartridges are difficult to compare, as few manufacturers actually make both rounds. Federal created .224 Valkyrie and the cartridge is made by few manufacturers; most notably by Federal itself as well as Hornady. Production of .224 Weatherby Magnum ammo production is even more limited, as it is a proprietary round still owned exclusively by Weatherby; as such, no manufacturers except Weatherby create firearms for the round. Because of the limited firearms, few ammo manufacturers bother creating the cartridge. However, it appears that Weatherby Magnum generally has lighter bullets but can deliver speed higher than the Valkyrie.

Is .224 Valkyrie Expensive?

Well, that depends, right? Compared to the .223 Remington, yes, the .224 Valkyrie can be expensive. While there may be overlap in pricing, you will generally find that .224 Valkyrie ammunition has a higher per-cartridge price than the .223 Remington. The .224 Valkyrie often has prices that are closer to larger-caliber ammunition. One of the main factors for a higher price is that the .224 Valkyrie is not as common as other rounds. Additionally, the ballistic performance and all the engineering horsepower that goes into the development of a superior caliber plays a role in the cost of ammo as it becomes available for sale.

What Type of .224 Valkyrie Ammo Should I Purchase for Target-Shooting?

The .224 Valkyrie is often used in semi-automatic weapons for target shooting, which means you need to purchase full metal jacket or total metal jacket ammunition. These cartridges will give you superior performance in the firearms while maintaining less fouling in the barrel.

What Type of .224 Valkyrie Ammo Should I Purchase for Hunting?

If hunting with the .224 Valkyrie, a soft-point or ballistic tip cartridge is the best choice. These bullets will give you excellent feeding while delivering expansion and energy-release upon impact.
