Our newest customers often ask us to recommend ammo for their fresh out of the box AR-15 rifles. When we have Hornady Frontier 223 Rem in stock, making that recommendation is easy as pie.

This is what we’d call a “vanilla” 223, as it has a 55 grain FMJ bullet loaded to a standard muzzle velocity of 3,240 fps. The FMJ is optimized for unerring feeding, reduced barrel fouling, and target grade accuracy over hundreds of yards. It can’t expand inside soft tissue, but its power is more than sufficient for varmint hunting – or home defense, where the threat is at close range. This round’s FMJ even has a boat tail, which means it ends with a taper that makes it keep a flatter trajectory and resist wind deflection.

See how this ammo’s brass cases are discolored? That’s a good thing. Hornady heats up their cases to make their brass more elastic, so they reliably expand to seal the chamber for more efficient ignition and then return to their original dimensions for smoother extraction.
