American Quality Ammunition 77 Grain Open Tip Match Ammo Details

You would love to get your hands on some of that Black Hills Mk 262 5.56x45 ammo – but you wouldn’t necessarily love to pay for it. Isn’t there any more affordable alternative available to shooters who want match-accurate 5.56?

There is. It’s made by American Quality Ammunition of Montana. And although it’s not quite on par with Black Hills’ best, it offers a truly satisfactory option for when you’re only interested in poking long-distance holes.

This cartridge’s bullet is what we in the industry occasionally refer to as a “big ‘un.” At 77 grains, it’s massive enough to drink up wind interference without budging very far off course. But that bullet isn’t just a big ‘un. It is also a Hornady open tip match: the ultimate target shooting bullet, which preserves its balance and its velocity with brilliant reliability. For best accuracy with a heavy bullet, a barrel with a twist rate of 1:8 or faster is recommended. This round has a muzzle velocity of 2650 FPS.

American Quality gets the most value out of Hornady’s fine bullets by loading them with American-made high-quality components, including reloadable brass.

Curious how it compares to the other match-grade 5.56 options? Catch a full review of this 77 grain round over here at the AmmunitionToGo.com Lodge.

Good accuracy out my 14.5" skinny barrel Colt and 11.5" Colt. But, I had several failures to cycle in the 14.5 upper. Milspec BCG, carbine gas and H2 buffer. The 14.5" upper has always been a reliable performer and I've used it in several 2 gun matches. There's just not enough powder. Accurate enough, just a few grains more powder for reliability !

So far I’ve shot about 250 rds of this and it’s becoming my go to 77gr 5.56 round. Going around 2600 FPS out of my 14.5 and had consistent hits out to 700 yds. No issues at all to report and fairly accurate out of my 14.5 centurion and 18” rosco barrels. Both were printing just about an inch.

Got this about a month ago and finally got around to shooting it with my AR. I have consistent failure to feed on multiple different kinds of magazines. It could be multiple reasons why but my intuition is that the powder isn't giving enough kick to the bolt to cycle properly. Tested the rounds themselves and have consistent 1MOA groupings (100 yards)
