Is there a Difference Between .357 Sig and the .357 Magnum?

Yes. While they both use the “.357” monicker, these are two cartridges that are distinct and unique. Compared to .357 Magnum ammo, the .357 Sig has different dimensions for bullet diameter, case diameter and rim diameter. The most notable difference is the narrow neck of the .357 Sig, which is “necked-down,” meaning the case is wider and narrows at the front before wrapping around the bullet. What is the Purpose of the Narrow Neck?

The most distinct feature of the .357 Sig ammo is the presence of the shoulders. Basically, the cartridge case is wider towards the back and then narrows to form what could be described as a shoulder and neck. The .357 Sig was based on a wider cartridge that was fitted to hold a smaller bullet. The result was that with a wider cartridge, more propellant could be packed behind the lighter projectile, creating superior velocities without lengthening the cartridge itself. Because of the unique shape (most handgun ammo is not necked), the .357 Sig remains a bit of an oddity in the firearms industry.

How Does .357 Sig Ammo Compare to the 9mm Luger?

The .357 Sig uses a bullet that is similar in diameter to the 9mm Luger. However, the 9mm Luger does not have the necking, and has a smaller case diameter. The increase in case diameter, and hence the amount of propellant, means the .357 Sig is generally faster and more powerful than the 9mm Luger.

How Does the .357 Sig Compare to the 10mm Auto?

At the base, the cartridges are similar in size, but the .357 Sig narrows towards the front and holds a bullet that is smaller in diameter. Because of the narrowed neck, the .357 Sig has a narrower bullet that is generally smaller in overall weight. The .357 Sig tends to be slightly faster in muzzle velocity, although the 10mm Auto generally delivers stronger muzzle energy, due in large part to the heavier bullet.

Can the .357 Sig Be Used for Self Defense?

Absolutely. .357 Sig ammunition is perfectly capable of providing effective self defense. With ballistics that make is comparable to many other popular rounds, the .357 Sig, however obscure, can be extremely effective when called upon. If purchasing this ammo for personal protection, select expanding rounds such as jacketed hollow points or soft points.

    Absolutely incredible ammunition. Have carried my German Sig P229 since 1996 cal .357 sig. Like this weapon so much purchased a second German P229 which remains unfired today. Chronographs at just over 1400 f.p.s. with Hornady load. Just below 1400 f.p.s. with Speer Gold dot. A former deputy sheriff I remember well the transition between the .357 mag and the 9 m/m. In the transition period, (1980's) the 9 m/m ammo had a bad reputation for stopping power. Not today, however the .357 Sig easily eclipses any 9m/m load out there. If loaded where it should be, the 9 m/m suffers an easy 200 / 250 f.p.s. to the .357 Sig. Accuracy wise the .357 Sig easily outperforms the 9 m/m. .357 Sig also much more snappy! Secret Service loves it, U.S. Air Marshalls love it, Texas Rangers love it. I love it. "Nuff said.
