These 9x19mm jacketed hollow-point (JHP) rounds from Federal represent some of the best self-defense technology available today. HST (unofficially called Hi-Shok Two) projectiles possess deep cavities, wide mouths, and lengthy jacket scoring which all contribute to triggering wide expansion on impact even at low velocities; this ensures that the bullets nearly double their diameter during entry after being fired from short barreled carry pistols. This mushrooming effect reduces the chance for over-penetration and causes all energy to be dumped into a threat in order to cause a quick stop. The 147 grain projectile weight produces the greatest terminal ballistics for the 9mm Luger caliber and offers smooth recoil due to its standard pressure charge.

Each bullet possesses a toothed cannelure which keeps it firmly attached to its brass casing for consistent accuracy and reliability after multiple chamberings or vibrations from recoil. HST casings are nickel-plated for corrosion resistance, equipped with clean-igniting Boxer primers, and filled with low-flash propellant which gives users a better sight picture in low-light environments. Federal's ammunition is notable for its quality and not only serves law enforcement personnel, but is used to bag big game trophies and secure Olympic gold medals by the U.S. shooting team. Buying these JHPs in bulk gives you plenty ammunition for practice and time-sensitive rotation.

Ballistic Gel Testing

In hopes of giving ourselves and our customers a better idea how this 9mm Luger (9x19) self-defense ammo would perform if called upon in a self-defense scenario, we tested dozens of the best selling hollow points on the market.

We fired five rounds of this Federal Ammunition 9mm Luger (9x19) ammo through a cloth barrier into Clear Ballistics calibrated synthetic gelatin and recorded the results. For these tests, we used a S&W M&P Shield with a 3.1-inch barrel. In the photos, graphics and video on this page, you can see specifically how the Federal Ammunition ammo performed and how it sticks up with the rest of the 9mm Luger (9x19) ammo we have tested so far.
