45 LONG COLT

45 Colt (aka 45 Long Colt) ammo was initially a black powder cartridge developed for the Colt Single Action Army revolver. The original load called for a 255 grain lead round nose (LRN) projectile, although heavier and lighter bullets are both common nowadays. Once primarily of interest to historic firearm enthusiasts, the 45 Colt has undergone something of a renaissance recently thanks to the popularity of the Taurus Judge and S&W Governor revolvers, which are both chambered for it in addition to 410 Bore shotshells. Is the .45 Long Colt the Same as .45 ACP?

No. In fact, 45 LC and 45 Auto are two very different cartridges. The .45 Long Colt was released in 1872, and is seen as one of the classic Wild West cartridges. The .45 ACP, on the other hand, was released in 1905 by Colt’s Manufacturing Company, with the assistance of legendary designer John Browning. The .45 Long Colt is largely intended for revolvers, while .45 ACP ammunition is meant for semi-automatic handguns. The .45 Long Colt has a slightly larger neck diameter as well shorter case length, among other differences. These are two distinct rounds that are not interchangeable. Which Firearm is Best for the .45 Long Colt?

The .45 Long Colt was created for revolvers, so it does not have many of the features that make other rounds ideal for semi-automatic weapons that load from a vertical magazine. It is also a good firearm for lever action rifles, but it actually was not used in rifles during its heyday. This is because the Colt company refused to make (or even allow other companies to make) rifles for the cartridge.

Is the .45 Long Colt the Same as .45 Colt?

Yes. This cartridge goes by a few different names, but it is most often called either .45 Long Colt or simply “.45 Colt.” These are just two names for the exact same cartridge. The ammunition also goes by the name of “11.43×33mmR,” although this name is rarely used among the shooting public. It may also be called the “.45 LC.”

Can You Use the .45 Long Colt for Personal Protection?

Yes. While the cartridge is largely viewed as a novelty round, used mainly for target shooting and cowboy competitions, the .45 Long Colt is certainly a capable self-defense round. It can deliver effective stopping power and velocity, and while it doesn’t get the same following for self-defense purposes as, say, the 9mm Luger or .357 Magnum, it remains a highly effective round for both target shooting and personal protection. If using the cartridge for personal protection, you will want to choose an expanding round such as a jacketed hollow point or jacketed soft nose.
