These 20 gauge slugs from Federal exhibit the power necessary to take down medium-sized deer alongside mild recoil. Federal's slug system utilizes a polypropylene sphere that sits inside of the hollow base of the 3/4 ounce slug and separates from it after leaving the muzzle. During barrel travel, the ball prevents the slug's skirt from collapsing inward which promotes total rifling contact and yields improved stability as well as tight groups that measure less than 2 inches at 50 yards.
Both the bare lead slug and plastic ball rest atop a collapsible, flanged wad which compresses during ignition to reduce felt recoil. The wad travels down the bore in order to keep the plastic ball centered, maintain the orientation of the slug, and make most efficient use of propellant gases with a flared rear; this same flare catches air outside of the shotgun and pulls the wad and ball away from the hollow-point slug. Upon impact, the lead slug will begin to expand while making blunt entry into a game animal. This mushrooming effect slows the slug and prevents over-penetration while delivering optimal energy to a deer's vitals for a clean, humane kill.
