Turn copper and a little bit of tin into powder. Compact said powder under high pressure until it conforms to the shape of a bullet. Congratulations! You have just created a frangible bullet, like the one Federal Premium loads in a BallistiClean cartridge!

What should you use your frangible bullet for? Why, target shooting under any circumstances where splash-back is a cause for concern, of course! The frangible bullet reacts to high-velocity impact with a rigid surface by smashing itself to tiny bits. In contrast, an FMJ may throw little pieces of its rigid metal jacket back in the shooter’s direction, which is a surefire way to put a sour spin on any range day.

Note how we didn’t instruct you to put any lead powder in your frangible bullet. That’s because frangible bullets – such as the fine 100 grain example of one Federal loads in this very cartridge – are lead free by design. Perfect if you’d rather not create a puff of lead vapor every time you squeeze the trigger, or disperse lead particles into the air each time you hit your target!
