50rds – 38 Special +P Magtech 158gr. SJHP Ammo Details
Are you going to the big city? The big mountains? The big beach? Wherever your travels take you, you’d better go there prepared to save your own hide. Thankfully, Magtech of Brazil makes just the 38 Special +P ammo for the job. That’s right, folks: this isn’t your grandma’s standard pressure 38 Spl ammunition. It’s loaded to a higher pressure, hence its ability to push a heavyweight 158 grain bullet to a velocity of 886 feet per second (out of a 4” test barrel, which is vented to simulate the impact of a cylinder gap). In addition to displaying a flatter trajectory, that enables the bullet to carry over 250 foot-pounds of force to 50 yards, which is still adequate for defensive purposes. But beware, as a +P round does generate extra recoil. It is also too hot for an older firearm to handle. Make sure your revolver is rated for +P ammo before buying it. If it was made before 1972, it probably isn’t.
This round’s bullet suits it even better for defense. The semi-jacketed hollow point’s incomplete (and notched) jacket and lead core’s large nose cavity both work toward consistently wide expansion. And even if the SJHP doesn’t reach its mark with enough energy to undergo expansion, its flat nose profile (which makes it a safe pick for any lever-action rifle) will still allow it to cut out a very harmful wound channel.
