Will the 6.8mm Remington Special Purpose Cartridge ever usurp the 5.56x45? Not very likely, at this rate, but that doesn’t mean it’s anything less than a very fine cartridge. This round is loaded with a 115 grain open tip. Right off the bat, we have to point out that the open tip is not an expanding bullet even though it strongly resembles a JHP. The opening in the bullet’s tip allowed Winchester to pour its lead core into place, which alongside the bullet’s thin and highly concentric jacket promotes extreme rotational stability.

The open tip’s aerodynamic jacket ends in a flat base. This prevents any part of the bullet’s lead core from deforming during ignition, and furthermore allows propellant gasses to push very evenly against the bullet as they rocket it down the barrel. These rounds’ match-grade brass cases and non-corrosive primers only do more to improve accuracy.
