The cartridge isn’t named after them, but Federal Premium played a substantial role in the 32 H&R Magnum’s development. Who better to make self-defense ammo for your .32 caliber revolver than the historic Minnesotan company itself?This round’s Hydra-Shok Deep is quite the distinctive looking jacketed hollow point. Its jacket is heavily furrowed, and fans out widely once its nose cavity fills up with soft tissue. The basin of the JHP’s nose cavity has a small post in its center; yet another feature that promotes wider, more consistent expansion. The JHP also boasts the durability it needs to attain deep penetration even if a barrier blocks its path to soft tissue.
This round’s reliable primer and specially formulated powder push its 85 grain projectile to a subsonic muzzle velocity of 1,025 fps out of a 4” vented test barrel (the vent simulates the effect of a revolver’s cylinder gap). Its nickel-plated brass case is smoother, more reflective, and more resistant to corrosion than a bare-brass alternative!
