Hornady’s Subsonic line of 45 ACP ammunition is, as you may have guessed, subsonic! Speaking frankly, a muzzle velocity that falls 200 fps short of breaking the sound barrier (in conjunction with a 5” barrel) is not remotely unusual for a 45 ACP cartridge with a 230 grain projectile. That said, this ammo’s low-flash propellant does optimize its performance for defensive shooting in low lighting, as it won’t immediately blind you upon pulling the trigger. It’s a great advantage even if your pistol hasn’t got a suppressor screwed to the end of its barrel!

The eXtreme Terminal Performance is the real star of the show. It is a jacketed hollow point projectile, with a jacket that fully encompasses the rim of its nose cavity. That prevents deformation which could have inhibited feeding in a semi-automatic pistol, as well as damage on contact which could have impaired subsequent terminal expansion. The XTP expands with the utmost reliability thanks not just to its tapered drawn jacket, but also the symmetrical notches which strategically weaken said jacket. The XTP’s swaged lead core and peak jacket concentricity also assure exemplary accuracy.
