I wish I were 8 feet tall. Sure, commercial airline travel would become even more uncomfortable than it already is. Sure, I’d have to shop at the biggest and tallest men’s store. But I’ll tell you one thing: If I were NBA sized, I’d be able to conceal a much larger revolver on my person.

Fortunately, Speer has average-sized guys like me figured out. That’s why they developed this ammunition specifically for use in 357 Magnum revolvers with barrels as short as 1.9 inches. Its muzzle velocity (as recorded out of a 2-V barrel) isn’t abnormally high at 990 fps. A snub nose will still hit its target with less force than a hunting revolver could have mustered. But thanks to the special Gold Dot jacketed hollow point’s ability to expand at lower velocities, it’s able to transfer faster energy on target and present lower risk of over-penetration than a regular 357 Mag JHP.

The Gold Dot Short Barrel JHP also performs well when the threat’s shielded by a barrier. It has a bonded jacket – molecularly fused to its lead core, no less – and therefore possesses the durability requisite for high-momentum impact and the deep penetration that follows.

This ammo is made in a non-spud-growing part of Idaho: Speer’s factory, which loads Gold Dot Short Barrel with nickel-plated brass cases and low-flash powder. That second feature may prove to be a blessing if you ever have to let it loose in the dark, where sudden bright flashes are blinding.
