Winchester Ammunition 40 Grain Jacketed Hollow-Point (JHP) Ammo Details

Founded in 1949 as a simple two-man operation, Hornady has become a world leader in the ammunition industry. Engineered specifically for hunting, the company’s Superformance line is manufactured using only the highest quality components.

Each factory fresh .308 Winchester (7.62x51) cartridge features one of Hornady’s patented Super Shock Tip (SST) projectiles. Weighing in at 150 grains, these SST bullets are constructed with Hornady’s trademarked InterLock ring system. This unique system keeps the bullet’s copper jacket solidly locked to the lead alloy core during expansion. In addition, the jacket and core are strengthened in critical areas. The result is excellent weight retention, deep penetration, and hard-hitting terminal energy transfer.

Hornady SST projectiles also feature a red polymer tip for a more aerodynamic profile. This sleek contoured design produces faster velocities, flatter trajectories, and a higher ballistic coefficient than the average hunting bullet. Upon target impact, the polymer tip is driven into the core of the SST, initiating expansion and producing massive damage in soft tissue.

This package contains 20 rounds of factory fresh, non-corrosive Superformance ammunition. These cartridges are boxer primed, reloadable, and feature high-quality brass cases. Hornady Superformance rounds are loaded with dynamic propellant powders specially formulated to increase performance without increasing recoil, chamber pressure, or barrel fouling. Each round produces a consistent muzzle velocity of 3000 feet per second with 2997 foot pounds of muzzle energy.

Ballistic Gel Testing

In hopes of giving ourselves and our customers a better idea how this 22 Magnum (WMR) self-defense ammo would perform if called upon in a self-defense scenario, we tested dozens of the best selling hollow points on the market.

We fired five rounds of this Winchester Ammunition 22 Magnum (WMR) ammo through a cloth barrier into Clear Ballistics calibrated synthetic gelatin and recorded the results. For these tests, we used a Ruger LCR with a 1.87-inch barrel. In the photos, graphics and video on this page, you can see specifically how the Winchester Ammunition ammo performed and how it sticks up with the rest of the 22 Magnum (WMR) ammo we have tested so far.
