Do you carry a 22 LR handgun as your primary or backup tool for personal protection? You could use conventional CPHP ammo, but you’d be much better off with Federal Punch – one of the very few lines of 22 LR that’s only designed for defensive shooting.

When a comparably weak 22 LR bullet expands in soft tissue, there’s a good chance it won’t penetrate deeply enough to quickly neutralize the threat. That’s why this round’s 29 grain flat nose projectile does not expand. It puts all its energy into penetrating soft tissue to the greatest depth possible, thus maximizing its chance at striking a vital organ.

This round’s bullet is very light, but it is anything but weak. Federal simply recorded its 1,070 fps muzzle velocity with a 2” barrel because that is an accurate reflection of the kind of subcompact 22 LR people are likely to carry. If you were to fire this same ammo in rifle with a 24” barrel, its muzzle velocity would spike up to 1,650 fps.
