50rds – 17 HMR Hornady Varmint Express 20gr. XTP Ammo Details

Hop aboard the Varmint Express! First and only stop: dead varmints.

This 17 HMR cartridge by Hornady is built to perform while you’re out walloping squirrels, prairie dogs, and woodchucks. It will easily take down a coyote with a headshot at 100 yards, too, because this round features Hornady’s very own 20 grain XTP projectile.

The XTP is a jacketed hollow point, with a gilding metal jacket that extends to shield its tip’s rim. That not only promotes unerring feeding in a semi-automatic firearm, but also helps the nose cavity to function correctly following impact. The XTP’s jacket promotes remarkably consistent expansion thanks to its carefully engineered varying thicknesses. The bullet’s interior is serrated to make expansion even more reliable, and its swaged lead core keeps it balanced in flight.

This round’s brass and propellant are both fine-tuned to best complement the 17 HMR’s performance, and its rimfire primer is surefire. For a pastime that demands pinpoint accuracy and devastating terminal performance, the Varmint Express is where it’s at!

I really like most Hornady products and have a lot of red boxes in my ammo/reloading cabinet, but I cannot give these 20gr XTPs top marks. Somehow, the Winchester equivalent just shoots noticeably better.

At 100 yards with the same, quality barrel and same weather conditions (including light crossing wind) and the same barrel temperature: Hornady: 1.2 MOA, Winchester: 0.6 MOA.

That said, unless you're hunting field mice, all of the above shots will fit well within your varmint's vitals.
