Hornady Ammunition 138 Grain Dangerous Game Solid Ammo Details

Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t stop a dangerous game attack with a 9mm pistol. Sure – it is advisable to carry something more powerful under certain circumstances – but with the right aim and the right ammo, a 9mm pistol is plenty capable of taking on all comers.

As you probably already figured, Hornady Backcountry Defense is not for conventional self-defense scenarios. It’s meant for terminating big nasty animals, which is why Hornady loaded it to an above-standard maximum pressure (38,500 psi, as opposed to 35,000). The +P cartridge delivers its heavy 138 grain bullet with the same 1,150 fps muzzle velocity as standard pressure 115 grain target load. That’s why it hits harder – and also why it recoils more (and isn’t advisable for antiques that aren’t rated for +P).

The Dangerous Game Handgun bullet doesn’t just strike with more force. Its expansion-free protected point design also enables it to stab as deeply into the target as it can. By averting expansion and deflection, the copper-jacketed, lead-core DGH poses your best chance of reaching and shutting off a vital organ – i.e. any of the giblets an animal would need in order to continue its attack.
