20rds – 5.56x45 Federal Varmint & Predator 50gr. JHP Ammo Details

It doesn’t matter if you’ve never thought of using your AR-style rifle for varmint and predator hunting before. If the world ever goes haywire, you’ll be glad you stocked up on this ammunition by Federal Premium ahead of time. Coyote chops, possum kebobs and raccoon à la king sure would beat eating nothing at all!

This round’s 50 grain jacketed hollow point obliterates small game. It works on the same principle as the JHP bullet in a self-defense pistol cartridge. Once its nose cavity fills up with pressurized soft tissue, the JHP instantly begins to expand outward while leaving a gaping wound cavity in its path. The JHP will likely cast off jagged fragments as well, which only makes its terminal performance that much deadlier to thin-skinned game.

You can expect slightly gentler recoil while you are firing this ammunition. Not by much, but its lighter bullet and lower muzzle velocity are both inclined to create less kickback. You can also expect reliable performance, because its Minnesotan manufacturer is one of the best in the business when it comes to drawing brass, weighing propellant and seating primers.

Federal has sold this load for many years (though not always in the same packaging). I've been using it for fox, bobcats, coyotes and as a general plinking round for about as long. While it's not the most accurate round out there, it does MOA in my CZ 527 and Rock River Coyote Rifle and so is plenty accurate for hunting. It's terminal ballistics are superb. Every varmint I've shot with it went down in its tracks. Though I cannot recommend it as a deer round, with neck shots it will drop the biggest buck with authority. Overall good to very good hunting load.
