20rds – 5.56x45 Armscor Subsonic 77gr. OTM Ammo Details

This subsonic 5.56x45 ammunition does not cycle a semi-automatic.

A canoe without a paddle. A sandwich without bread. A suppressed 5.56x45 rifle without subsonic ammunition. All three of these things are missing something very important!

This cartridge’s bullet is pretty heavy (albeit not abnormally so) at 77 grains, but that’s not why its muzzle velocity is slower than the speed of sound (1,100 fps; 18” test barrel). It’s just backed by a tepid payload of propellant, which is how it manages to avoid shattering the sound barrier when some hunk (e.g. you) pulls the trigger.

Know what a bullet does when it breaks the sound barrier? It makes a sonic boom, which a suppressor is categorically incapable of stifling. No sonic boom equals optimal suppressor functionality. It’s simple as that, Matt!

Armscor loaded this round with an impressive bullet, even if it doesn’t move fast or remain effective past ~100 yards. It’s a Hornady open tip match, which would have been optimal for competitive long-range shooting were its muzzle velocity normal and not subsonic. The OTM’s nose cavity doesn’t dish out terminal expansion, but that’s of no concern if you’re just using this ammo for its intended application, which is target shooting.
