Bears are pretty cute … when they’re far away. But if an angsty bear ever gets in your face and starts indicating that it’s about to use your body like a piñata, your reaction shouldn’t be to pet it. It should be to reach for your revolver, which would ideally be loaded with Hornady Backcountry Defense ammunition.

This is the 460 Magnum flavor of Backcountry Defense, loaded with Hornady’s own 300 grain Dangerous Game Handgun projectile. It’s not a hard cast, but rather built more like a jacketed soft point – except instead of expansion, it’s designed to poke the deepest injury into its target that it’s able. It owes this feat to its protected point, which binds the rim of its copper jacket to that of its dense alloyed lead core so that neither can expand nor otherwise deform.

The DGH is also designed to conserve the shooter’s visual on the target. Since its jacket fully encapsulates the base of its core, the DGH won’t produce thick lead smoke as it races through the barrel – very helpful if you’d like to be able to see where you’re aiming your follow-up shots.
