This 450 Bushmaster round from Hornady’s Subsonic line of ammunition serves as an interesting demonstration in ballistics. Its muzzle velocity is about the same as that of a 22 LR at 1,050 fps (from a 24” barrel), yet its ten times heavier bullet accordingly carries ten times greater energy. Neat!

This is the round to choose when you’re hunting with a suppressor, but it still noticeably dampens sound and flash signatures without a can. Its 395 grain Sub-X bullet is designed to deliver shocking terminal expansion following impact at velocities as low as 900 fps – in this case 241 yards, by our math. The Sub-X achieves this thanks to its supple Flex Tip which wedges into its underlying nose cavity to spread the bullet outward.

This round’s bullet further features a crimping cannelure to prevent setback in a semi-auto, which along with its InterLock ring further helps the notched jacket remain firmly rooted to the core for superior weight retention during penetration. To cap things off, a boat tail to keep downrange velocities faster and the Sub-X itself more potent!

Hornady’s Subsonic ammo is brass cased for even better functionality in a semi-auto. Each round’s low flash powder comes to life at the command of a very sensitive and non-corrosive Boxer primer, giving you a reliable solution for crepuscular hunting.
