This cartridge’s bullet is a hard cast wide flat nose gas check. The bullet’s base is designed to prevent propellant gasses from escaping around its edge, which makes for more efficient ignition. Its nose is shaped to promote straight, deep penetration through an animal’s dense flesh. Its thickly alloyed lead body is too hard to exhibit any kind of deformation – let alone terminal expansion – which is precisely why it can be trusted to inflict a long enough wound channel to KO a black bear. (Lack of expansion is also why you don’t want a hard cast for defense against human threats, which the bullet is likely to pass through entirely.)

This standard pressure round’s bullet weighs 120 grains. That equals 1,250 fps muzzle velocity (501 ft lbs muzzle energy) out of a 3” barrel, or 1,450 fps (560 ft lbs) out of a 6”.
