At the time of writing, the U.S. penny is officially discontinued. We say good riddance! It was a waste of copper that otherwise might have gone toward the production of lead-free 280 Ackley Improved hunting bullets.

This cartridge’s 140 grain bullet is the Trophy Copper. It shoots clean: zero lead fouling, and it has a grooved body to help it leave behind less copper fouling as well. It shoots straight, too, thanks to its monolithic body’s flawlessly distributed weight, aerodynamic polymer tip, and boat tail (which, being made of solid copper, will not deform under the pressure of ignition). All of those perks ensure that the Trophy Copper’s striking energy doesn’t drop to triple digits until it has soared 740 yards (according to Federal’s 24” test barrel 3,075 fps muzzle velocity and 0.489 G1 BC).

Copper’s not just clean and balanced. It’s also durable – so much so that high-velocity impact won’t strip so much as 2 grains off of the bullet’s body. That means the Trophy Copper retains its weight, so it’s just as well equipped for deep penetration as it is devastating terminal expansion.
