200rds – 5.56x45 Armscor Subsonic 77gr. OTM Ammo Details

This subsonic 5.56x45 ammunition does not cycle a semi-automatic.

If you google “sonic” in Google Images, you’ll see a bunch of pictures of a blue cartoon rat. I don’t know why this is. Perhaps it is a very fast rat that can steal cheese at the speed of sound – which, for reference, is around 1,125 fps (give and take, depending on altitude, air pressure, humidity, and some other factors).

This 5.56x45 ammunition, by Armscor? It is subsonic. At a meager 1,100 fps (18” bbl), its 77 grain projectile’s muzzle velocity is less than half the normal rate for its weight.

That has obvious implications for ballistic performance. Despite being a balanced, momentum-conserving, velocity-retaining heavyweight open tip match (OTM), the bullet simply hasn’t got the juice it needs to move across a flat trajectory, remain accurate beyond 100 yards, or strike with sufficient kinetic energy to ethically kill medium game.

But for all its shortcomings, that 77gr OTM does one extremely valuable thing. It’s quiet. Its report isn’t characterized by the zesty “KERPOW” of a sonic boom, which means it’s easy on the ears even if you haven’t got a suppressor. But if you are using that particular muzzle device? Well, that’s the best way to hear just how dim the 5.56 can report, right there!
