Do you have a healthy respect for the sound barrier, and wish to avoid breaking it with your 45-70 Government rifle? Hornady must already have known that much about you, because they loaded this Subsonic 45-70 ammo just for your hunting pleasure!

Bullet: 410 grains. Propellant charge: weaker than usual. Muzzle velocity: 1,075 fps out of a 24” barrel. Those stats converge in a cartridge with remarkably little recoil, as well as the quieter report a suppressor handles best.

The Sub-X isn’t just an acceptable choice of bullet for subsonic hunting. Hornady specifically engineered it for that very application! Within the Sub-X’s wide nose cavity sits a red polymer column. It is a Flex Tip, which flattens, compresses, and applies force to the interior of the nose cavity during collision with deer/hog/etc. So much pressure helps the Sub-X’s jacket burst open along its notches and continue widening out during penetration. In this instance, Hornady promises terminal expansion if the bullet strikes with at least 738 ft lbs of kinetic energy, which the 0.285 G1 BC Sub-X will conserve at ~255 yards (if fired from a 24” tube).
