This shell is no fun for coyote, deer (at close range), or a home invader, though. It is loaded with #3 buckshot (not to be confused with #3 shot, which is 0.14” in diameter as opposed to 0.25”). There are 20 pellets of the stuff, which weigh around 1.05 ounces altogether and have a combined muzzle energy of almost 1,500 ft lbs when they rip out of the barrel at 1,200 fps.

Regardless of whether you’re hunting or defending, you don’t want a wide pattern. That’s why this American-made shell’s shot is buffered – i.e. packed with soft plastic granules that separate, cushion, and prevent the shot pellets from deformation under recoil. Rounder shot pellets fly in tighter formation, which is precisely the formation that puts more holes through the target. Genius!
