Lead. On its own, it’s an excellent (by which we mean “deadly”) metal for pheasants. But when lead is paired up with copper, its excellence truly becomes second to none.

Winchester’s Super Pheasant 12 Gauge ammunition is super for pheasant hunting because its #5 lead shot (the most popular size for that very same game bird) is plated with copper. The extra metal’s benefits are twofold. It hardens the shot pellets so they can avoid getting mashed down under their own weight during ignition. A narrower pattern ensues. The copper-plated shot’s superior hardness also fortifies it for deeper penetration. Instead of flattening out on impact, it retains the spherical shape which encounters less resistance as it presses inward.

Don’t expect this 2-3/4” shell to kick like a target load. Its 1-3/8 ounce payload is heavy (and puts around 330 pellets on target), and its muzzle velocity is high (but not waterfowl load high) at 1,300 fps.
