Little shotshell, big world. Federal’s Shorty Shotshell is a mere 1-3/4” long. That does mean it’s not as powerful as a longer round, but there are in fact many advantages to its short stature.

You can load more of these rounds into a shotgun – and being able to fire more shots without reloading is a good example of what we call a “tactical advantage.” The little shell hasn’t got enough powder or shot to compare to a full-size shell in terms of sheer energy delivery. That said, its six pellets of 00 buck do tear out of the muzzle with approximately 1,110 ft lbs of energy – enough to ethically harvest a deer. That’s certainly adequate for self-defense, and a shorter shell’s lighter recoil will reduce the amount of muzzle rise you have to compensate for after every shot fired.

Its littleness isn’t even the most interesting thing about a Force X2 shell. This round’s 00 buck is segmenting. Each pellet will split apart into two pieces after striking its target. This potentially doubles the number of wound channels while simultaneously guarding against hazardous overpenetration. Very clever!
