Lake City Not Applicable Unknown Ammo Details

We order tons of ammo from the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, the U.S. government's primary small arms ammunition supplier. The other day we received two barrels from the factory that were meant to be full of 7.62x51 M80 ball ammo, but which turned out to include a mixture of both M118 match and M80 ammo instead.

We’re sure you can imagine how thrilled we were at the prospect of sorting thousands of rounds of 7.62x51 ammunition. So we said the heck with it – package the two types of ammo together in batches of 200 rounds, and let our fine customers sort it out at home!

We can’t promise what percentage of ammo you’ll get. You might get a 50/50 blend, far more M80 than M118, or a bag of just M80. It’s a truly random assortment! As you can see in the photos, the case we pulled for these photos was almost entirely M80.

You’ll be able to tell the rounds apart by their bullets in an instant. The M118 rounds have 175 grain open tip match bullets, with narrow openings in their tips which indicate that their cores were poured into place while still molten. The M118 is an intensely accurate sniper’s bullet, great for long-distance shooting. The M80 rounds, on the other hand, have 149 grain full metal jacket bullets. These are good old-fashioned range loads for all your target shooting and plinking needs.

Both types of cartridges are brass cased, non-corrosive, and American-made. The cases are gray around their necks and shoulders not because they were previously fired, but because they have been correctly heat-treated for suppleness.

Got 46% (M118) to 54% (M80) split. Wanted more M118 but happy with what I received. Have not shot any of it yet but will soon. Thanks.

Dang good ammo. I got a 30/70 split (match/range). Not bad at all. Some of the best ammo. Search for "History of the M118 Ammunition" for background and a good read.

Been shooting this ammo for 15 years and haven’t had a single problem yet. Maybe a bent cartridge or something but nothing that’s really the ammunition’s fault.
