5.45 x 39mm ammo is a Soviet designed cartridge for the AK 74 series of weapons, including short carbines, rifles, and light machineguns. The cartridge replaced the heavier and older 7.62 x 39 cartridge and provided a lighter-weight, less recoiling, and easier to control round for the Soviet army.
The Soviet Union was one of many in the international military community looking to downsize their cartridges to allow for ease of use, less required training, and to allow soldiers to carry more ammunition. The Soviet Union, NATO, and eventually China all adopted lighter, smaller cartridges. The 5.45x39 Soviet round experienced it’s baptism by fire in the Soviet Afghan war. 5.45x39 ammunition is growing in popularity and has become a favorite for AK enthusiasts, as well as finding its way into AR styles rifles, and even conversion kits for the popular Tavor Bullpup cartridge.
