Federal Ammo
Federal Premium Ammunition is one of the largest and most comprehensive ammunition manufacturers on the planet. The company has a bunch of brands you've probably heard of, including American Eagle Ammo, Fusion, and Guard Dog, but their flagship brand is Federal Premium, one of the top choice for multiple shooting activities. Thanks to quality and consistency, this innovative company has a strong reputation among hunters, target shooters, and self-defense gun owners.
While they make ammunition and reloading supplies for pretty much any shooting activity and produce for the U.S. Government/Military at their Lake City facilities, Federal markets themselves heavily in the world of hunting as well as the world of self-defense ammunition. Odds are good you've heard of Hydra-Shok and HST's if you've spent anytime in a concealed carry class. These hollow-points are know around the world for consistent penetration and expansion - two characteristics law enforcement and self-defense experts crave.
On the other side - their lineup of hunting ammunition includes options for game of all shapes and sizes, including varmints, big game, waterfowl, and even dangerous game.
Federal is based out of Anoka, Minnesota, where they employ nearly 1,400 workers at a facility that holds half a million square feet of workspace.
The company was founded in 1922 by Charles L. Horn, who put a particular emphasis on quality and service. It was originally called the Federal Cartridge Company and produced many different products, including shotgun shells. In 1951, the company introduced centerfire primers to their lineup.
By 1960, Federal was color-coding their shotgun ammunition. They were the first ammo manufacturer to color-code their products, a practice that is now widely used throughout the industry. Another innovation came in 1973, when Federal became the first ammunition company to manufacture shells with steel shot.
In 1977, “Premium” centerfire rifle cartridges were introduces by the company, launching the Premium brand for Federal. In 2002, they would officially change the name of the entire company to Federal Premium Ammunition, displaying their commitment to top-quality cartridges and reloading supplies.
One of Federal’s proudest moments was when their “Gold Medal” load helped Team USA win three Olympic medals at the 1996 games in Atlanta.
Federal has always been a company involved in outdoor habitat and conservation. As an example of the company’s consistent commitment to the outdoors, Federal has been a long-time partner with the National Wild Turkey Federation, as well as Pheasants Forever.
In 1937, they even participated in a self-imposed excise tax on ammunition and firearms, an effort that raised billions of dollars for wildlife habitat. By 2014, the company had sold 40 million Pheasants Forever special-edition shotshell, an effort that supported organization directly.
