fund conservation. In the state, the director\u2019s salary rose $60k+ in just 2 years! The fee hike proposal has since been scrapped.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On average, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ziprecruiter.com\/Salaries\/Fish-And-Wildlife-Technician-Salary\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wildlife techs are making <\/span><b>$15\u201322\/hour.<\/b><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indeed.com\/cmp\/U.S.-Fish-%26-Wildlife-Service\/salaries\/Biological-Technician?period=HOURLY\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biologists are being paid between <\/span><b>$40\u201360k.<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indeed.com\/cmp\/Wildlife-Conservation-Society\/salaries\/Field-Technician?\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Field officers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are stretched so thin with resources highly concentrated and allocated towards leadership salaries, many agencies are keeping open positions unfilled.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Bureaucratic Bloat: Greasy Handshakes Shakedown Conservation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-82828\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ammunitiontogo.com\/lodge\/wp-content\/uploads\/AdobeStock_89363194-Web.jpg\" alt=\"Red Deer Stag Silhouette \" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ammunitiontogo.com\/lodge\/wp-content\/uploads\/AdobeStock_89363194-Web.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ammunitiontogo.com\/lodge\/wp-content\/uploads\/AdobeStock_89363194-Web-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When hunters and anglers open their wallets to buy a license, they assume the money flows into conservation, habitat, or wildlife management. What they don\u2019t realize is that among the drivers of these fee hikes aren\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammunitiontogo.com\/lodge\/deer-population-density-in-the-u-s\/\">deer populations<\/a>, habitat declines, or rising diesel costs \u2014 they\u2019re the people sitting at the top of these agencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And not a single one of them was ever voted into power.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In every state pushing double-digit license increases \u2014 Washington, Maryland, Oregon, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Ohio \u2014 the story is the same. Directors and secretaries are <\/span><b>not elected<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They\u2019re <\/span><b>appointed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by governors or by commissions who are also appointed. It\u2019s a closed loop: bureaucrats selecting bureaucrats, insulated from the voters who actually fund the system.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>No Downward Accountability<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These directors don\u2019t answer to hunters or anglers. They answer upward \u2014 to political appointees, administrative boards, and governors\u2019 offices. Downward accountability? Zero. If they mismanage budgets, shrink public access, or lose tens of thousands of participants through higher fees, there is <\/span><b>no mechanism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the public to remove them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A decline in hunter participation that would get a CEO fired earns a wildlife director a new title, a new deputy, and a fresh 5-figure salary bump.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Institutional Nepotism Inside Wildlife Agencies<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hiring pipeline makes it worse. <a href=\"https:\/\/wdfw.wa.gov\/about\/administration\/leadership\">Many directors<\/a> are promoted from inside the very agencies they later oversee \u2014 climbing the ladder from biologist to supervisor to administrator to deputy director, until they eventually become the ones signing off on the fee hikes. It\u2019s not meritocracy. Hunters and anglers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the perfect bureaucratic ecosystem: insulated from the public, incentivized to grow itself, buffered from accountability, and free to raise fees whenever balance sheets get tight from administrative bloat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When inflation is 3% but directors boost their pay 40%, 60%, even 90%, you start to understand the real driver of these \u201cbudget shortfalls.\u201d When an agency spends freely on new administrative roles, expanded communications teams, luxury conferences, travel junkets, and deputy titles that didn\u2019t exist five years ago, it becomes clear why they \u201cneed\u201d more money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And instead of trimming fat at the top, they go after the people who can\u2019t vote them out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunters.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Anglers.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Taxpayers.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The very people who <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">built<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the conservation model.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These fee hikes aren\u2019t born out of necessity \u2014 they\u2019re born out of a system where the decision-makers are accountable only to each other.
