If you\u2019ve spent any time in an online shooting forum, you know exactly what I\u2019m talking about. The world of firearms has its own jargon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, not everyone properly uses the lingo. (After all, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammunitiontogo.com\/lodge\/magazine-vs-clip\/\">how many times have we heard a magazine called a clip?<\/a>) For new shooters learning shooting fundamentals, the language of seasoned shooters can be confusing and intimidating. And the fact that gun people can be wary of anyone who doesn\u2019t speak fluent firearm, doesn\u2019t do a lot to help newcomers sort things out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To compound the situation, the language of firearms has evolved with few solid rules. In many cases, the vocabulary seems to have a mind of its own, wandering in circles without an obvious pattern. This is particularly true when it comes to caliber. Throw in all the numbers, decimal points, and metric measurements and it&#8217;s enough to make a newbie\u2019s head spin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the interest of education, we are going to explore the basics of cartridge caliber designations. It is measured in inches or millimeters. The term also applies to the diameter of a bullet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For clarification, \u201cbullet\u201d\u00a0 refers to the projectile fired by a round of ammunition. Although many uninformed media pundits will use the term bullet to refer to firearm ammunition, the \u201cbullet\u201d is only part of the package. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammunitiontogo.com\/lodge\/what-are-the-basic-parts-of-ammunition\/\">entire thing is a cartridge<\/a>.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h4>Imperial Measurements<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caliber is expressed in either metric or Imperial measurements, depending on where the cartridge was developed (Usually inside the United States versus pretty much anywhere else in the world. As usual, the U.S. likes to do its own thing.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, &#8220;.22 caliber&#8221; or &#8220;.45 caliber\u201d are Imperial measurement designations. .22 and .45 is the diameter measured in inches. (When pronouncing these terms, you drop the decimal point. For example, a 9mm handgun has a bore diameter of approximately nine millimeters. There is no decimal point and we drop the term \u201ccaliber.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, don\u2019t wander into the local sporting goods store and ask for a 9mm caliber. That is technically incorrect. The strictest definition of caliber is diameter measurement in inches. However, gun people will still use caliber in a general sense to refer to diameter no matter the measurement used.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, you might ask the question, \u201cWhat caliber handgun do you prefer?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To answer, \u201c9 millimeter\u201d (or \u201c9 mil\u201d or even just \u201c9\u201d) is an acceptable answer. Most gun people understand you are referring to general diameter when you talk about caliber, so the answer isn\u2019t limited to standard English measurements. No one expects you to refer to your Glock 17 as a .355. In fact, if you did, you would probably get more than a few weird looks.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caliber Isn\u2019t Exact Math<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are math junkie, caliber designations might actually give you a headache, because the numbers are rarely exact measurements. A 9mm bullet is the same diameter as the bullet used in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammunitiontogo.com\/index.php\/cName\/pistol-ammo-380-auto\">.380 ACP<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ammunitiontogo.com\/index.php\/cName\/pistol-ammo-38-special\">.38 Special ammunition<\/a>. So what do all those extra numbers mean?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It depends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, the rules aren\u2019t set in stone and cartridge designations are usually set by the company that developed them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of the .30-30 Winchester (affectionately called \u201cthirty thirty\u201d), that extra 30 originally referred to the 30 grains of smokeless powder in the cartridge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The -06 in .30-06 (pronounced \u201cthirty aught six\u201d) has nothing to do with the cartridge itself. Instead, this number refers to the year 1906, the year these rounds were officially adopted by the United States military.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The .308 Winchester is the only straightforward answer. .308 is the actual bullet diameter measured in inches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then there are cartridges with designations resembling complex math problems. 7.62\u00d751 (also referred to as 7.62 NATO) also fires a .30 caliber projectile. To break down the structure of this cartridge designation, the first number refers to the diameter of the projectile. (In this case, 7.62 millimeters). The number following the \u201cx\u201d typically refers to the length of the cartridge, also measured in millimeters.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Note About Shotguns<\/span><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4368\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4368\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4368 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ammunitiontogo.com\/lodge\/wp-content\/uploads\/gauges-300x236.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ammunitiontogo.com\/lodge\/wp-content\/uploads\/gauges-300x236.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ammunitiontogo.com\/lodge\/wp-content\/uploads\/gauges-1024x805.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ammunitiontogo.com\/lodge\/wp-content\/uploads\/gauges-1536x1207.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.ammunitiontogo.com\/lodge\/wp-content\/uploads\/gauges-2048x1609.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4368\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">12 gauge versus 20 gauge shotshells<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Caliber generally refers to handguns, rifles, and ammunition. Shotguns are a little different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We generally measure the barrel diameter of a shotgun in gauges. Shotgun gauges are determined by taking a lead ball that fits snugly inside the gun\u2019s bore. The number of lead balls this size that add up to one pound in weight is the gauge of the shotgun.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, it takes twelve lead balls the size of a 12 gauge shotgun bore to weigh a single pound.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exception to this rule is the .410 shotgun. Although, the .410 is often referred to as a \u201c.410 gauge,\u201d the true gun nerd understands this terminology is incorrect. .410 is actually the diameter of the bore in inches. In truth, this small bore shotgun could be referred to as a 67 \u00bd\u00a0 gauge. When in doubt just call it a \u201cfour ten.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Converting Caliber to Millimeters<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because caliber is typically measured in inches, understanding how inches compare to millimeters is a big help. This will also help you convert caliber to millimeters and vice versa. Consider this a basic firearms math lesson.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you look at a standard grade school ruler, you can easily see that each centimeter is divided into ten equal segments. Each of these tiny hash marks measures one millimeter. If you compare the centimeter side of the ruler to the inches side, you can also observe that one inch is equal to 2.54 centimeters. (I didn\u2019t actually observe this with my naked eye. This is because the bullet must be larger than the distance between lands to form a proper seal in the barrel.
