Barnaul 55 Grain Full Metal Jacket Boat Tail (FMJ-BT) Ammo Details

The Barnaul Cartridge Plant was founded in Saint Petersburg, Russia back in the 1800s. They produced the Russian military’s ammo during both World Wars, and today they export millions upon millions of rounds of ammunition to the global commercial market.

This 223 Rem cartridge has Barnaul’s most distinctive feature: a steel case. By cutting so much brass out of their production process, Barnaul is able to dramatically lower their ammo’s price tag. The Russian manufacturer goes a step further by coating their cases in heat-resistant polymer, aiding a rifle with feeding and extraction without additionally fouling its chamber. Steel cases are not suitable for reloading, but the money they save a shooter speaks for itself.

This cartridge is crowned with a 55 grain bullet and loaded to a muzzle velocity of 3,261 fps. The bullet prohibits terminal expansion in favor of the cost-effective full metal jacket design which prevents feeding jams and rapid barrel leading. The bullet’s boat tail raises its G1 ballistic coefficient to .255, enabling it to retain two thirds of its initial velocity at 300 yards. So flat a trajectory is just the ticket for rewarding range training. (Do note that the bullet’s bimetal jacket contains steel and is therefore magnetic.)

Ignition is tended to by this round’s Berdan primer. It sparks up as dependably as a Boxer primer, and it is totally non-corrosive.
